Duckweed  (Lemnoideae) is a subfamily of flowering aquatic plants, known as duckweeds, water lentils, or water lenses. They float on the surface of slow or still bodies of freshwater in ponds and swamps. The plants have a simple structure, lacking a stem or leaves. Instead they consist of a frond structure with air pockets, that allow it to float. Plants reproduce asexually by budding with a new generation every 1.2 days. Duckweed produces more protein per square meter than soybeans, and is consumed as a food source in south-east Asia and Israel.

Duckweed is a viable food source in ponds for fish and waterfowl. It helps to absorb excess nitrogren in the water and can quickly colonize a body of water. Duckweed helps to cool the water by covering the surface and absorbing solar energy. A great addition to any pond, terrarium, or aquarium, as it provides oxygen, and a food source.
